Uhhhhhh it says down below, several options after world map, story mode? How can you not figure that out? All you had to do is read. Maybe you shouldn't play ACVD unless you've played before. Cause if you can't figure out how to do a regular sortie, then you aren't ready to play ACVD.

I saw sortie, but non were available. It seemed like you had to join a team and wait for them to deploy you somewhere because you are a rookie recruit. There's a map, but it's not really clear what's going on. I wasn't able to find a way to launch a battle there. To be honest I didn't mess with it long. There's no reason to be a **** about it.
Ok, fair enough.
The map behind you is the World Map. It consists of three factions that fight for control over land through Armored Core's "seasons". After the season is over it restarts. It's sort of like PC with a touch a MAG. PC because you're fighting for land. MAG because you have to select one of the three factions to fight for without knowing who's all involved in the team.
There's a selection that allows you to pick which faction you choose to fight for. But I would suggest holding off on that until you unlock all the store parts from story mode.
To go to story mode, you select sortie. Story is at the bottom of the selection. Go beat story mode before you step into faction warring. As stated above, better parts will unlock as you complete missions. Plus story mode is a small introduction to learning how to pilot your AC. It is imperative that you know how to.
You can always hire a merc to help you on missions (if anybody is signed up, aka online) from the Signs organization. Signs is just the mercenary board that keeps lists of mercs for hire.
If you haven't played Armored Core before, read up on the different types of weapon damages. There are CE (Chemical Energy), KE (Kinetic) and TE (Thermal). KE is weapons like missiles. Thermals are the lasers. And for the life of me I can't remember what CE is now. I do know that explosive weapons do carry CE.
Your defense/offense is important when dealing with those three types. If you are fighting a primarily KE defensive AC and you have KE weapons, you will get a "ineffective" notice in your crosshairs. Basically, it won't hurt the AC. Opposite though, you will do heavy damage.
Also, if you're not fighting you should be in scan mode.
Also I don't know if you know Shocknofsky (he plays AC and Dust as well, CEO of H.Y.S.T.E.R.I.A.), but he can also help you out. He's got more background in ACVD than I do since I just recently started getting back into AC. He has helped me to get acclimated to ACVD.
Hope this information helps

Also here's a wiki on ACV, which is just about the same as ACVD. From the section Gameplay to Ultimate Weapon, I would suggest you read to get a clear understanding of how some of the fundamentals work.

I honestly think this is less intuitive than Dust was when i started playing.
I've yet to figure out how to get through much of anything on the game with it's horrendous UI.
Yep, AC has always been not NPE friendly. Why I laughed about some comments here concerning the NPE of Dust.
I would suggest that you check out youtube videos and google search information.
As a new player you should be going to Sortie and doing story mode. Ignore everything else until you're ready.
